GOSHEN – Orange County Sheriff’s Investigator John O’Brien has been named Deputy of the Year by the New York State Sheriff’s Association.

He was recognized for his actions while assigned to the US Marshal Service Regional Task Force.

O’Brien was working with the task force to execute a violent felony warrant on a subject wanted in connection with the shooting of a Massachusetts State Trooper.

O’Brien sprang into action and rendered first aid to the downed officer. He applied a tourniquet then removed him from the scene where they awaited the response of additional medical personnel.

O’Brien’s actions were instrumental in saving the life of another law enforcement officer, who sustained a life-threatening gunshot would.

Authorities said without his immediate actions, the survivability of the officer would have been diminished, officials said.
