POUGHKEEPSIE – Members of the Union Street District Neighbors Collective, a group of tenants and homeowners in the historic section of the City of Poughkeepsie gathered Saturday to do some spring cleaning. The efforts of the volunteers were awarded by a luncheon provided by Jeremy Phillips at Zeus Brewing on Main Street.
Collaborative member Paul Hesse, a homeowner in the neighborhood, said Saturday’s effort included about a dozen residents of the area, including Evan Menist, the second ward common council representative who lives in the neighborhood.
Hesse, the Community Development director for the city called the group effort, “A great way to meet new neighbors and get together with friends.” Hesse and Menist noted the city DPW provided bags and gloves for the cleaners and would be picking up the collected trash later Saturday afternoon. Menist provided masks and hand sanitizer to the crew that had broken up into three groups to gather the trash.
“It’s great to see the community that cares about their neighborhood coming out to clean,” said Menist. The collective is planning a neighborhood rummage sale next week, taking place in the parking lot of Marshall & Sterling, at the corner of Main and Union Streets.
