PORT JERVIS – Psychiatric nurse practitioner and community activist Barbara Marszalek is planning to challenge Port Jervis Mayor Kelly Decker in the November election.

Marszalek will run on an independent line under her PJ Pride Party banner.

The four-term Decker will be running on the Democratic and Conservative Party lines.

There is no Republican candidate.

Marszalek decided to run for the city’s top spot after being urged to by several residents.

She acknowledged that Decker has had “a lot of great ideas,” but since he has been mayor for eight years, the community needs a change.

Independent petition to run for office must be filed between May 18 and 25.
