Route 9 in Town of Wappinger to be renamed this weekend.

TOWN OF WAPPINGER – Supervisor Richard Thurston, the town board, and the Wappinger Veterans Advisory Group have announced a weekend of socially distant events honoring military veterans, including the “Joseph Ennesser” 5K Run/Walk for Veterans Causes on Saturday.

Participants in the 5Kevent can register Saturday morning.  Check-in is at 7 am and the race begins at 8 am. The start of the event will be at the Lake Walton / Van Wyck Trailhead of the William R. Steinhaus-Dutchess Rail Trail. The race will proceed north into the Town of Wappinger along the “Veterans Memorial Mile” of the trail. Proceeds will go to the Wappinger Veterans Advisory Group to further veteran recognition projects throughout town. For more information visit please www.wappingerrecreation.com.

A joint effort between the town board, Senator Sue Serino, and Assemblyman Kieran Lalor, resulted in legislation signed by Governor Cuomo dedicating the entire length of US Route 9 in the Town of Wappinger as ‘Wappinger Veterans Memorial Highway’.

On Sunday, April 18, town, county, and state officials will host the dedication ceremony for the renaming.  The 11:00 am event will be held at the corner of Liss Road and Route 9 near one of the new signs that will be unveiled on Route 9. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard as well as members of the American Legion will be present for the day’s festivities. Light refreshments will be served.

According to Supervisor Thurston, the town has made significant strides in the past year to further recognize veterans and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice that lived here in Wappinger. The Veterans Advisory Group is working with the town to offer “hometown heroes” banners for town streets, memorialized pavers in town parks, and special events such as those that will be taking place this weekend.
