NEWBURGH – The one-year Leviticus Fund study of housing needs in the City of Newburgh has been completed and presented to the city council.

One of its recommendations is to explore rent control for apartments as prices continue to escalate in the city.

Mayor Torrance Harvey said that is one issue the city council will seriously explore.

“The housing study does make that as one of the recommendations in seeking rent control and rent stabilization in the City of Newburgh, so that is something that we are in discussion about, but I am pretty sure that many of us are in support of something like that because of the data,” he said.

Enacting rent control would require state approval.

The concern for instituting that comes as more apartments are upgraded prompting landlords to increase rent.
