Municipal unemployment runs high in Valley

ALBANY – The unemployment rate in many Hudson Valley municipalities in February was almost double what it was one year earlier, the State Labor Department reported.

The City of Mount Vernon had the highest rate at 10.4 percent, up from 5.0 percent in February 2020.

The City of Poughkeepsie followed with 9.7 percent joblessness, up from 5.0 percent one year earlier.

The City of Newburgh had 9.6 percent unemployment, up from 5.1 percent in February 2020.

That was followed by the Town of Haverstraw, with 9.1 percent joblessness, up from 5.1 percent; Yonkers at 8.6 percent, up from 4.6 percent; and New Rochelle at 8.2 percent, up from 5.1 percent.

The Village of Port Chester and Town of Rye had the lowest rates of unemployment in February, each with 5.4 percent. They were followed by the Town of Mamaroneck and the City of White Plains, each at 5.5 percent.

Region-wide the Hudson Valley unemployment rate in February was 6.7 percent, up from 4.0 percent one year earlier.
