CLARKSTOWN – U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to take steps to address PFAS recently discovered in water supplies in Rockland and Westchester counties.
He called on the EPA to immediately set a maximum contaminant level to regulate PFOA and PFOS in drinking water; to review health data on all PFAS chemicals together and propose and implement specific regulatory actions that they can take against all of them; and to immediately begin phasing out non-essential uses of PFAS chemicals while it undertakes the other two prongs.
Schumer said following the previous administrations’ “lack of urgency on these issues,” he was pleased to hear the EPA was reviving efforts to regulate the chemicals. But, he said the EPA must move swiftly to evaluate the health data for broader class of PFAS chemicals rather than address each of the over 9,000 chemicals individually.
