POUGHKEEPSIE – An early morning traffic stop in the City of Poughkeepsie resulted in police officers physically struggling with an armed suspect that had drawn a loaded weapon from his waistband.

On Tuesday, March 9, at approximately 2:27 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle in the vicinity of Main and White Streets.  According to Police Captain Richard Wilson, the officers were conducting an investigation when a weapon was located on one of the occupants.  The man attempted to flee from the scene.

Officers were immediately able to physically grab hold of the man, identified as 26-year-old Rawl Deslandes.  A struggle ensued between the suspect and officers.  A taser was deployed in an attempt to subdue the man but was ineffective.  Deslandes was eventually subdued and the weapon, a loaded .380 semi-automatic, was secured by police.  The weapon was previously reported stolen in Connecticut.

Weapon seized from Deslandes.

Deslandes is on parole for a previous weapons conviction, according to police union officials.

Deslandes was charged with the felonies of criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of stolen property.  He was also charged with the misdemeanor of resisting arrest.  Following processing, Deslandes was held in custody pending arraignment in city court.
