Virginia police officer killed in line of duty was Newburgh native

STANLEY, VA – Stanley, VA Police officer Dominic “Nick” Winum, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on February 26, was a native of Newburgh. Many of his family members still reside in Walden.

Winum, 46, was a tomato farmer on the eastern shore of Virginia before he followed his calling to become a police officer.

He spent the first 10 years in law enforcement with the Virginia State Police and in 2016, joined the Stanley Police Department. He was also known for his ammunition and “dummy round” business.

Winum leaves behind his wife Kara, four children and their spouses, a granddaughter, seven siblings and their spouses, several nieces and nephews and extended family.

A funeral service is taking place today (Thursday) in Luray, Virginia followed by a private family burial.
