NEWBURGH – Former Newburgh City Councilwoman Gay Lee announced her bid to recapture a seat on the lawmaking body.

Lee, a Democrat, will be seeking the Ward One post as incumbent Karen Mejia is not seeking reelection.

Rising property taxes is a primary issue for Lee.

“Certainly, homeowners cannot be responsible for floating the city’s public services. There has to be another way to address the tax issue and I think bringing revenue into the City of Newburgh is our best idea,” she said.

And, that can be accomplished by continued economic development issues, Lee said.

At this point, she is the second candidate to announce for the post; Giselle Martinez, a political newcomer, announced weeks ago that she would seek the party endorsement for the seat.
