KINGSTON – First-term Alderwoman Michele Hirsch has announced she will be seeking a second term to represent the Ninth Ward on the Kingston Common Council.

“Two years isn’t enough to accomplish what I set out to do, especially since the pandemic intensified the work,” which includes ensuring working families can still afford to live in the city, she said.

Hirsch serves on the Finance and Public Safety/General government committees.

The city lawmaker, who contracted the virus last spring, noted she successfully introduced legislation regarding landlord registration in response to the COVID-19 eviction moratorium; a resolution supporting state efforts to provide rental assistance to people struggling through the pandemic; a resolution calling on the state to reject Westchester Medical Center’s proposal to remove in-patient mental health and detox services from the Mary’s Avenue Campus of Health Alliance in Kingston; legislation requiring the building department to submit monthly progress reports to the common council; legislation streamlining regulations on short-term rentals; and working together with Ulster County Government to ensure short-term rental operators are complying with relevant land use protections.
