Mount Vernon, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, have highest unemployment in region

ALBANY – Municipalities in Westchester County have the highest and lowest unemployment rates in the Hudson Valley.

The State Labor Department reported that in December 2020, the City of Mount Vernon, with 10.2 percent unemployment, had the highest rate of joblessness in the region.

The Town of Mamaroneck, conversely, had the lowest rate, at 4.0 percent.

Regionwide in December, the rate of joblessness was 5.8 percent.

The City of Newburgh was rated second highest with 9.2 percent unemployment, followed by the City of Poughkeepsie and Town of Monroe, each with 8.4 percent joblessness.

The Town of Haverstraw had an unemployment rate of 8.1 percent.

On the low end of the scale, the Village of Harrison had 4.5 percent unemployment, while the Town of East Fishkill had 4.8 percent.

The towns of Carmel, Greenburgh and Ramapo each had 4.9 percent rates of unemployment in December 2020.
