CATSKILL – A retired Greene County sheriff’s deputy has passed away as a result of long-term effects of Agent Orange to which he was exposed in Vietnam.

Deputy Raymond Berg of South Cairo died on February 1.

He had served as an Army helicopter crew chief.

Berg joined the Greene County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time deputy in June 1982. He was appointed to a full-time deputy post in December 1982 and served in that capacity until February 2000 when he was promoted to deputy sheriff’s investigator.

He was also a member of the Greene County Fire Investigation team, which he started.

Berg retired from the sheriff’s office in May 2001.

He also served on the Town of Cairo Police Department from 1980 to 2006.

“The entire Greene County Sheriff’s Office expresses its deepest sympathies to Deputy Berg’s family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague,” an agency statement read.
