MONTICELLO – Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff and County Treasurer Nancy Buck both announced on Monday that they would seek re-election in November.

Both are Republicans.

Schiff will be running for a fifth four-year term as the county’s top law enforcement official. Prior to hold this post, he was a state trooper for 28 years.

One crowning achievement during his tenure as sheriff stands out to Schiff.

“I think for everybody involved, the biggest is the new jail, road patrol and civil facilities where we put our people in a professional, clean environment,” he said. “Our jail people use to go into work and they just never complained. They worked double shifts. In the winter they wore their coats inside; in the summer they were sweating after about 10 minutes in there. There were no air circulators in there; there was no air conditioning.”

The new complex replaced a more than 100-year-old building.

Schiff has won two early endorsements by the New York State Troopers PBA and Village of Liberty Police PBA.

Buck served as deputy treasurer from December 2000 to December 2014, when she was appointed by the legislature to treasurer.

She has overseen the ups and downs of the economy and its impacts on the county coffers.
