PEEKSKILL – The City of Peekskill Police Department has released details of a new scam seeking donations to pay for equipment for the department, according to an announcement made early Saturday morning.

The police department was alerted to the scam by city residents that allegedly received solicitations in the mail from the U.S. Deputy Sheriff’s Association in Merrifield, Virginia.  The organization appears to imitate the United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association that is headquartered in Kansas.

The suspected scam letter sent from the Virginia organization claims to be for the “National Drive for America’s Police and Sheriff’s Emergency Equipment Shortage Peekskill, New York Area.”
The Peekskill Police Department is not affiliated with this organization and does not solicit donations for emergency equipment. Police officials in Peekskill are advising residents to disregard the request.  “If you’re contacted by this entity you are the target of a scam –  please do not make a monetary donation of any sort,” said police officials.
The Peekskill Police Department is also asking residents to share the scam warning with fellow Peekskill residents.
