WAWARSING – An Ellenville teen, who attended an outdoor party at an abandoned ski lodge near the ice caves at Sam’s Point in Wawarsing remains missing after 34 years.

Joseph Helt was 17 years old when he was last seen on the night of January 16, 1987 and State Police continue to investigate his disappearance.

Helt left Mount Cathalia Road where the ski lodge was located with friends in a white Subaru. They were on their way to the ice caves at Sam’s Point. The vehicle got stuck in the snow and Helt left on foot to find help. He was never heard from since.

At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a camouflage jacket, a t-shirt, a long sleeve thermal shirt, a gray hooded sweatshirt and white high-top sneakers.

After he disappeared, snowfall and below freezing temperatures hindered several search efforts.

Many leads have been followed over the years with numerous interviews of witnesses, friends and family, all to no avail.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the State Police at the Wawarsing barracks at 845-626-2800.
