Package thief busted in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie Police have made the first arrest in an ongoing investigation of car burglaries and theft of packages from doorsteps.  The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation, according to sources.

On Thursday at approximately 1:48 p.m., members of the City of Poughkeepsie Community Policing unit responded to Corlies Avenue for a report of a package theft in progress.  According to police, a concerned resident witnessed several subjects take packages from a porch of a residence and flee on foot.  The witness provided a detailed description of the alleged thieves and also gave the route of their departure.

Responding officers were able to stop a man and woman matching the description and conduct an investigation.  As a result of the investigation, police arrested 35-year-old Michael Knapp of Poughkeepsie and charged him with the misdemeanors of criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Knapp was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing.  The recovered stolen property was returned to the rightful owner.

Police officials said that this arrest is a direct result of the assistance rendered by a member of the public. Package thefts, vehicle break-ins, and auto thefts are an ongoing issue throughout the city and the police are asking for the community to continue their help.
