MONTICELLO – A 41-year-old Liberty man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court to three years in state prison for assaulting a 75-year-old man in the Village of Monticello last June.

Eric Weygant physically attacked the man on Broadway in Monticello on June 9, 2020, causing lacerations to the victim’s head.

The two men were acquaintances who ran into each other that morning when Weygant asked to make a call using the victim’s cell phone. Following the call, Weygant became agitated and attacked the victim. Passersby stopped the assault and Weygant was taken into custody by members of the Monticello Police Department.

Weygant was indicted on a charge of felony assault for intentionally attacking the elderly man.

Weygant pled guilty to the charge on January 13 and was also sentenced to three years of post-release supervision. The court also issued a permanent order of protection in favor of the victim.

“My prosecution of Weygant took into account the significant physical advantage he had over this vulnerable victim, which, together with all of the other circumstances, warrants the sentence imposed,” said District Attorney Meagan Galligan.
