Man arrested in Poughkeepsie machete attack

POUGHKEEPSIE – A machete attack on Manitou Avenue in the City of Poughkeepsie on Monday sent one man to the hospital and police have arrested the suspect.

Shortly before 1 p.m., city 911 dispatchers received several reports of a man attacking another with a machete in the vicinity of 28 Manitou Avenue.  As police were responding, additional callers reported that the attack, occurring on the sidewalk, was continuing.

The officers were able to use minimal force to disarm the perpetrator.  Additional police officers and detectives arrived on the scene to interview witnesses.  Poughkeepsie firefighters rendered aid to the victim who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Otis McNeil Elvy, 24, was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing.

The unidentified victim, according to neighbors, has been regularly witnessed pushing a shopping cart through the neighborhood in search of returnable bottles and cans.
