Wrong-way driver in Peekskill fatal crash charged with vehicular manslaughter

PEEKSKILL – A 41-year-old Yorktown man is being held in the Westchester County Jail on a charge of vehicular manslaughter following a wrong-way crash on Route 9 in Peekskill.

State Police said around 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Mark Cope was driving a 2018 Audi Q7 while in the wrong-way northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck a 2020 Acura MDX with three occupants. Two sustained non-life-threatening injuries while the third person was killed.

Cope was under the influence of alcohol and remanded in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or bond.

State Police are asking anyone who may have observed the wrong-way operation that led to the accident to contact State Police at 914-769-2600.

Troopers were assisted by Peekskill Police. Peekskill and Montrose Fire Departments and the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene.
