TOWN OF LLOYD – On Christmas Eve day, Lloyd Police Chief James Janso recalled an emotional story that started in May and wrapped up in December with a decorated Christmas tree.

The chief said in May, his officers responded to the residence of an 85-year-old Highland resident who just had his bride of 50 years pass away.  Since May, Chief Janso and Lieutenant Roloson would take a few minutes to go and visit with the widower and assess his well-being.  This extra effort occurred a few times during the spring and summer.

In the fall, the elderly man stopped at the police station and told Janso that he was preparing to start parting with some of his late wife’s possessions.  The following day Janso and Roloson went to visit the man at his home.  Janso said that one item, a Christmas tree, caught his eye.  The chief bought the tree for use at the police station.  He also bought some ornaments and decorations from the gentleman.

A few days after the tree was erected and decorated by members of the police department, Janso paid another visit to the gentleman.  This visit was to personally invite the widower to the station to see the decorated tree that once belonged to the man’s wife.  The senior accepted the invitation and went to the station.  “He was so incredibly happy to see that his wife’s tree was up in the station,” said Janso.

The chief shared the story as a way to demonstrate how something so seemingly simple to one can have such an impact on another.  “To most people, this is just a Christmas tree… but to someone in the community, this tree meant a lot to him and his late wife,” stressed Janso.  “Sometimes, the smallest and simplest act of kindness such as purchasing a Christmas tree means the most to others and brings joy to them.

So, the next time you see a Christmas tree, stop and look at it, enjoy it, and remember it is just not a Christmas tree. It is a whole lot more. It is memories, family, love, and the spirit of the season! Merry Christmas!
