KINGSTON – Ulster County Government reduced its spending in the third quarter of the year by six percent from the same period last year, according to a report from the county comptroller’s office.

The reduced spending was aimed at addressing COVID-19 revenue shortfalls, said Comptroller March Gallagher.

“On the revenue side, we are down; sales tax is not down as much as e thought, and that is great, but there are areas like occupancy tax where we only collected 46 percent of our budgeted revenues in occupancy and normally by this time we collected between 75 and 80 percent,” she said.

Gallagher also noted that unemployment during the third quarter dropped from a pandemic high of 14.6 percent to 5.8 percent at the close of October. It was still higher than the October 2019 unemployment rate of 3.5 percent.
