NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh has been awarded $500,000 in CARES Act funding to assist apartment residents with back rent due to the coronavirus pandemic.

City Economic Development Director Ali Church said the program will be administered by Legal Services of the Hudson Valley.

“If someone lost their job, had reduced hours, had to take off because they had to care for children, any of that, we can potentially cover their lost rent to stave off some evictions that we are worried may be coming,” she said.

Church also acknowledged landlords have been “severely impacted” as well by not collecting rent so this stimulus aid will assist them.

The program will commence at the start of the new year.
