CATSKILL – Police are advising residents to beware of fake utility workers seeking to gain entry into their homes.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint on Thursday, October 10 of two men who told a Town of Catskill resident that they were Central Hudson employees and needed to check their electric panel box.

They told the resident that power would be out and generators would be provided, but first, their panel box had to be inspected.

After the men left, the homeowner discovered money had been stolen.

Central Hudson was contacted and said no work was going to be conducted in the area.

The utility and Greene County Sheriff’s Office advises residents:

  • All Central Hudson employees and contractors will provide a picture ID badge upon request.
  • The main Central Hudson number, 845-452-2700, can be called to verify legitimacy.
  • They will not always have a marked vehicle so that alone does not mean it is not a legitimate employee.
  • They rarely have to enter a home – exceptions would be a gas leak or gas smell.
  • There are no generators being offered at this time.
  • If you have any doubt or are unable to verify employment, do not open your door or allow anyone into your home.
