LIBERTY – Tourism growth in Sullivan County was the fastest growing in the state in 2018 and 2019, according to the just-released Oxford Economics Study.

Tourism spending rose by 14.5 percent in 2019 and by 12.2 percent in 2018.

Sullivan County Visitors Association CEO Roberta Byron-Lockwood credits the county’s success to all of its tourist opportunities from the casino, waterpark, spa, and Bethel Woods to the outdoor recreational and historic opportunities the county has to offer.

“There are such great little communities, without having a city and having a county the size of Rhode Island, it is really incredible to see the success, the growth, the synergy that is happening on all of our main streets, on all of our businesses,” she said. “And having a county the size of Rhode Island; it’s really incredible to see the success, the growth, the synergy that is happening on all of our main streets, on all of our businesses.”

The coronavirus pandemic and the months-long shutdown of tourism destinations took its toll, but Byron-Lockwood said the rural nature makes the county an ideal location for tourists wanting to get away from it all.
