KINGSTON – A 21-year-old man pled guilty in Ulster County Court to the stabbing death of a Wawarsing man on December 3, 2019.

Tiquan Underwood admitted that he intended to cause serious injury to Jomar Gonzalez, 24, and caused his death by stabbing him during an altercation in a driveway in Wawarsing at about 9 p.m.

Underwood, a resident of Sullivan County at the time of the crime, called 911 from the scene claiming to have been the victim of an assault involving several people; however, he did not have any physical injuries. He was also unable to flee the scene as his vehicle was disabled in a snowbank and police arrived a short time later.

The knife used in the stabbing was recovered in the snowbank.

Underwood is expected to be sentenced to 18 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision when sentenced in January.

Ulster County District Attorney David Clegg called the murder “senseless.”
