KINGSTON – Walking patrols by Kingston City police officers began on Monday and Mayor Steven Noble said Tuesday they are designed to bring the cops closer to the community.

Areas of Midtown, Downtown, and Uptown will have the officers walking for at least 40 minutes per shift, said the mayor.

“There is so much better of a dialogue when you are on the streets talking to one another compared to when you are in a police car,” he said.

The new patrols are part of the city’s community policing effort. They are hoping those walking patrols might help in solving some of the recent shootings in Kingston.
