POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie Police Officer was rushed to MidHudson Regional Hospital shortly before 8:00 pm Saturday night for injuries suffered during an attack.

Initial reports indicate that two officers responded to 25 Smith Sreet for a report of an emotionally disturbed person threatening another individual with a weapon.  Officials now say that one of the first two officers was stabbed by the suspect.

A call for backup units was made by the officer’s partner during the attack. Officers from several agencies responded immediately.

According to Mayor Rob Rolison, the officer was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Police Chief Tom Pape was with the officer at the hospital.

“This shows the inherent danger officers face every day when encountering people that are having emotional or other mental issues.  This incident could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the quick actions of the officers,” said Rolison.

One suspect has been taken into custody and transported to police headquarters.

City of Poughkeepsie detectives were at the scene interviewing potential witnesses Saturday night.
