Erick Santander, a Level 3 Sex Offender is facing new felony charges.

NEW PALTZ – Town of New Paltz officials want to do what the neighboring Town of Lloyd has done by restricting the number of registered sex offenders permitted to stay at a local motel.

The state has the authority to place those individuals and New Paltz Town Supervisor Neil Bettez said the EconoLodge is the motel that is allowed to place them.

“I don’t think it is our responsibility in New Paltz to take on the responsibility. This is the only hotel/motel registered for level three sex offenders in all of Ulster County and because of COVID, this hotel has registered to take these offenders and we are getting a big increase and we are trying to control it a little bit,” he said.

Bettez said the town believes the state should create halfway houses or some other form of temporary housing for those highest-level sex offenders.

The town board will conduct a public hearing on the local law restricting the numbers of offenders on November 11.
