WHITE PLAINS – A former orthopedic surgeon from Hopewell Junction, who was previously convicted of health care fraud, pled guilty in White Plains federal court to new charges in a scheme in which he assumed the identity of a licensed orthopedic surgeon and obtained over $876,000 in payments for reviewing patient files in connection with healthcare appeals and Workers Compensation cases.

According to the allegations in the indictment to which Spyros Panos, 52, pled guilty, he defrauded medical peer review companies by impersonating a licensed orthopedic surgeon practicing in Westchester County.

Panos pled guilty on Thursday to wire fraud, health care fraud, and aggravated identity.

When sentenced in March 2021, he could face 20 years in federal prison.
