Former Poughkeepsie YMCA

POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie and County of Dutchess are working on joint plans to redevelop the former YMCA property, which the city owns, into a youth empowerment center.

Mayor Rob Rolison and County Executive Marc Molinaro have signed a memorandum of understanding and the mayor said the next step is to take the proposal to both legislative bodies.

“We are putting, within the next week or so, the finishing touches on an intermunicipal agreement which will then go to the common council and the county legislature that will give the County of Dutchess a legal stake and a partial ownership, so to speak, in that property,” the mayor said.

That will then give Molinaro the ability to seek legislative permission to borrow up to $25 million to create the youth center.

Once constructed, it would be operated by a consortium of organizations.
