Pedestrian struck and killed by freight train

NEWBURGH – Police are investigating a fatal accident between a CSX freight train and a pedestrian that occurred early this afternoon.

Newburgh City Police responded to the incident at Water and Renwick streets.

A CSX spokesperson confirmed the fatality, saying “This afternoon at approximately 12:34 pm, a CSX train fatally struck a pedestrian walking a dog on the railroad tracks near Renwick Street and S Water Street in Newburgh.”

According to the spokesperson, CSX personnel are cooperating with the Newburgh Police Department who is investigating the incident.

Railroad officials extended sympathies while offering a warning about safety near rail lines. “CSX appreciates the swift response by local emergency responders and extend our thoughts to those impacted by this tragic event. Safety is our highest priority in the communities we serve. Incidents like this are a sobering reminder that any unauthorized activity on or near a rail line is very dangerous and should be avoided.”
