NEWBURGH – City Police in Newburgh have arrested a man wanted as a state parole absconder who was in the possession of a loaded 9 mm firearm, 500 envelopes of heroin, 30 grams of crack cocaine, 3.5 grams of fentanyl, 41.8 grams of heroin containing fentanyl, and $2,000 in cash.

Alberto Rivera, 25, of the Town of Newburgh, was apprehended about 1:20 p.m. by Det. Vasta ad Lt. Rola after he tried to evade the police and ditched his backpack when he ran.

The backpack was found on the roof of 209 Broadway. It contained the gun, drugs and money.

Rivera was taken to the hospital for treatment of his asthma and then he was booked and held on his parole warrant.

Prosecution of the firearm and narcotics recovered will be handled by the US Attorney’s Office.

A previous interaction that Rivera had with the police over the summer was video recorded. That recording was used to document proof by State Parole to show that Rivera had police contact which he then failed to report to his parole officer. By his failure to notify parole of his contact with police he violated the conditions of his parole.
