WHITE PLAINS – A Somers school bus driver pled guilty in Westchester County Court on Tuesday to felony driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law with children in a vehicle last December.

William Mendez, 62, was released on his own recognizance pending sentencing a year from now.

On December 9, 2019, at 4 p.m. The Somers Central School District was notified by a parent that bus driver Mendez was “acting strange” while driving children home.

The school district director of transportation immediately called the bus dispatch to have the driver stop. The director and other employees met the bus and relieved Mendez of his duties. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

State Police investigated and a search warrant was executed to obtain a biological sample from Mendez. Lab analysis revealed his blood alcohol content was 0.22 percent.
