Two EMTs killed in Thruway crash

Thruway crash scene in Suffern

SUFFERN – Two men, both EMTs, who were returning home to Rockland County after celebrating the Rosh Hashanah holiday in Pennsylvania. Were killed early Monday morning in a crash on the southbound Thruway in Suffern.

State Police identified the victims as Moshe Herzog, 27, of Spring Valley, and David Schneebalg, 26, of Monsey.

Troopers said the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Herzog was driving at around 1:4 a.m. attempted to change lanes and possibly exit the highway at exit 14B at Airmont Road and collided with a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Luis Velazquez, 59, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, which was in the right lane.

Both vehicles crashed into a ditch along the wood line. The Tahoe burst into flames. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Velasquez was trapped in the truck and had to be extricated. He was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
