BETHEL – Land at Sullivan County International Airport has been placed on the state’s Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites.

The land, which is on the southwest side of the runway, has been listed as a class-two site that presents a significant threat to public health and/or the environment.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation said sampling of soil and potable and non-potable water supply wells at and near the facility has indicated the presence of PFAS chemical.

Additional investigation is needed to define the nature and extent of contamination, to evaluate associated human exposure pathways, and to determine the appropriate actions that will need to be implemented to prevent and mitigate potential exposures, the DEC said.
