NEW PALTZ – The DEC will be hosting a webinar providing updates on the NYS Food Donation & Food Scraps Recycling Law. They will be joined by NYS Pollution Prevention Institute who will provide an overview of their services and an exciting announcement on upcoming available funding for organics diversion.

In 2019, NYS passed the Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling law. Effective January 1st, 2022, large generators of food scraps (generating two tons per week or more) must donate any edible food and recycle all remaining food scraps if they are within 25 miles of an organics recycler (composting facility, etc.).

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation will provide an update on the NYS Food Donation & Food Scraps Recycling law:

  • An overview of the law and implementation timeline
  • Requirements of designated food scraps generators
  • Methodology to determine a list of designated food scraps generators
  • Regulatory Update
