WHITE PLAINS – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry has been awarded $599,881 and Rockland Community College in Suffern has been awarded $550,086. Both awards come from the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program.
“Throughout my time in Congress, I have fought continuously for the expansion of education opportunities,” said Congresswoman Lowey. “Everyone deserves the chance to get a top-level higher education, and that is why the work of local institutions like Rockland Community College and Mercy College to improve their facilities and create opportunities for minority and low-income students in high-demand fields is so critical to our community.”
“We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Education for selecting Mercy College as a recipient of an HSI program award. This funding will enable Mercy College to expand educational opportunities for our Hispanic and low-income students and prepare them to excel in high-demand health science careers,” said Tim Hall, Mercy College President. “Our Advancing Curricular Change to Enhance Student Success (ACCESS) project will increase the number of available training slots to meet the pressing need for nurses, particularly in the New York City metropolitan area, and will provide for robust student engagement in the college experience. The HSI program is a key resource that will enhance Mercy College’s student-focused programs that offer the support needed to ensure academic success and attainment of a college degree.
