OSSINING – State Senator David Carlucci has introduced legislation that will force utility companies to reimburse customers for spoiled food resulting from prolonged power outages.

Carlucci said that Orange & Rockland (O&R )and Consolidated Edison (Con Ed) will be reimbursing for food and medicine for those who lost power for more than 48 hours due to Tropical Storm Isaias. Residential customers may receive reimbursement for up to $235, or up to $540 with receipts. Business owners are eligible for food spoilage reimbursements up to $10,700 with receipts. Fill out the appropriate form below to claim your reimbursement.

Claim forms for Rockland are available here.

Claim forms for Westchester are available here.

Carlucci says that the current reimbursement is not enough. “We need legislation on the books to always require power companies reimburse customers following lengthy power outages. This is not a decision that should be made only after public pressure from officials and residents.”
