MONTICELLO – The US Department of Agriculture has awarded the Village of Monticello $5.6 million for upgrades to its water plant.

The total cost of the project is $18 million with the village being loaned the remainder to be paid back at one percent interest over 20 years.

Mayor Gary Sommers said the upgrades are long overdue.

“The water quality is good. It will help with the maintaining of water quality that we have, and it will give us the ability to service a larger area with our water plant if necessary,” he said.

This grant is similar to one years ago for the village sewage treatment plant upgrade.
