NEW WINDSOR – The death of 29-year-old fireman Alec Tannenbaum will not be considered a line of duty death, Vails Gate Fire Chief James Merritt announced on Friday.

He said the official cause of death is pending. “Funeral arrangements will continue as planned to honor Firefighter Tannenbaum as the dedicated public servant and combat veteran that he was,” the chief said.

Outside fire department personnel are asked to be lined up on Route 9W by 10:30 a.m. to honor the procession entering Cedar Hill Cemetery. The graveside funeral will be private.

Tannenbaum was a career firefighter at West Point and a volunteer fireman with the Vails Gate Fire Department. He worked at both facilities on Tuesday and was later found unresponsive at his home.

A Purple Heart recipient, Tannenbaum served in Afghanistan.
