NEW CITY – In the wake of all of the damage from the tropical storm this week, State Senator David Carlucci (D, New City) is introducing legislation to ensure that utility companies reimburse customers for spoiled food and medication when power outages last longer than three days.

“It is unacceptable that after every strong storm, customers shoulder the cost of outages when they are the ones paying for power,” he said.

Carlucci called on the local utility companies to “do the right thing without legislative action.” He said they should provide a process for ratepayers to submit expenses that have arisen due to companies’ “delayed response.”

He encouraged customers facing prolonged power outages to save their receipts for food and medicine should those provisions be enacted.
