VAILS GATE – A procession honoring Vails Gate Firefighter Alec Tannenbaum will be held at noon on Sunday, August 9.

Tannenbaum, 29, had concluded a shift with his full-time job as a West Point firefighter on Tuesday and then spent the remainder of the day in his volunteer role with the Vails Gate Fire Department, assisting in clearing roads and other functions during the tropical storm.

He was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital. The cause is unknown at this time.

Fire Chief James Merritt said the family has requested a private graveside service for family and close friends. Masks will be required because of COVID-19.

All visiting fire department personnel are being asked to stage along Route 9W south of Cedar Hill Cemetery to honor the procession by 11 a.m.

Parking and shuttle will be available at 1 Pavilion Drive in Newburgh.

Officials from Orange County Emergency Management will be present to direct the procession viewing.

All attendees are reminded to wear face coverings and be mindful of all pandemic protections.
