Peekskill mom indicted in stabbing of her young child

WHITE PLAINS – A Peekskill woman was arraigned on Tuesday after being indicted by a Westchester County grand jury for the stabbing of her eight-year-old child.

Dayona Hammonds, 33, appeared in county court via video conference before Judge Anne Minihan.

Hammonds is alleged to have stabbed her child on February 17 in their Main Street, Peekskill apartment at 7:40 in the morning.

Peekskill Police received a call of a child in danger and when they rushed into the apartment, they found Hammonds, who had already stabbed the child, still holding the knife.

The child was hospitalized with a puncture wound to the abdomen and a laceration to the liver. The child underwent surgery and recovered from the wounds.

Hammonds remains in jail on bail.

She was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and endangering the welfare of a child.
