ALBANY – The state may have imposed drinking water standards for three emerging synthetic chemicals found in municipal systems last week, but there still exist none for private wells.

Rob Hayes, the clean water advocate for Environmental Advocates New York, said that is an issue that must be addressed.

“There are still no requirements in New York to test for private wells or to clean them up where dangerous levels of contamination are found. That is absolutely an issue with chemicals like PFOS and PFOA and another issue Governor Cuomo and the legislature will have to address going forward,” he said.

Private wells in the towns of New Windsor and Newburgh have been found to contain levels of those chemicals.

Last week the state imposed strict limits on those chemicals. There can no longer be more than 10 parts per billion of PFOA or PFOS in drinking water and no more than one part per billion of 1,4 dioxane.
