MONTICELLO – The man killed in Tuesday’s crash of an ATV with an SUV on Route 17B near Kaufman Road in the Town of Thompson had illegally driven the off-road vehicle for 66 miles from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It is against the law to operate an ATV on public roadways.

Jeffery Savage, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten.

An investigation by Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies revealed that Savage had driven the unlicensed vehicle to Monticello to pick up a car part.

The ATV was last registered in the Bronx but reported stolen in Pennsylvania.

Savage had 23 suspensions on his driver’s license and two warrants for petit larceny from Suffolk County, New York.

He was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police in Blooming Grove on June 1 for contractor fraud.

Assisting the sheriff’s office at the scene were Monticello Police, State Police, Monticello Fire Department and Mobile Medic.

Sheriff Michael Schiff said the investigation is ongoing.
