BETHEL – Sullivan County has signed a deal with a developer to construct a two-story, 18,000-square-foot airplane hangar on vacant land near the terminal building at Sullivan County International Airport near White Lake.

The agreement with Sullivan County International Airport Partners Ltd., a New Windsor-based real estate developer, will see the structure up and running by the end of the year, said Legislature Chairman Robert Doherty.

“It is going to bring 35 jet airplane mechanic jobs and part of the deal is that they asked for a surcharge on jet fuel, and we said yes, which means they ae looking to sell jet fuel,” he said.

The deal calls for a land lease of $9,000 a year, rising two percent annually thereafter for a total of 30 years. The company will also pay $550 a month in maintenance fees and has the option to build two more hangars – one at 40,000-square-feet and the other at 50,000-square-feet.

The hangar, which will be operated by Skyways’ Jet 60 division, which operates service bases at airports in Morristown, New Jersey, Huron, South Dakota, and Van Nuys, California.

“We’re planning on building a world-class hangar complex and jet maintenance facility in Sullivan County,” said Skyways’ CEO Jon Mende, who envisions the company’s headquarters relocating there. “It’s a great location, close to New York City, with amenities like the casino and waterpark close by.”

“This deal finally delivers on years of promises to make our airport a hub of economic development, and it positions us to attract more such development in the future,” said Legislature Public Works Committee Chairman Joe Perrello. “Especially now, when COVID-19 has hit us so hard, we have to be tightly focused on bringing in badly needed revenue, and this lease does that.”

The deal will bring in $365,000 to the county.
