NEWBURGH – Former Newburgh deputy police chief Arnold “Butch” Amthor has been named the new deputy chief of the Newburgh city department, becoming the highest-ranking officer in the department.

Since he was deputy chief for 1 ½ years before, he could be named chief in six months since to hold the top post, one must have served as deputy chief for a total of two years.

Amthor recently retired as chief of the Montgomery Town and Maybrook Village police departments. He has had over 35 years in law enforcement.

He will assume his new post in Newburgh on August 1.

As we reported last week, Pastor Rob McLymore, who is a full-time police lieutenant in the Town of Wallkill, will become the Newburgh department’s senior advisor acting as a liaison between the community and city government.

Mayor Torrance Harvey said the two new individuals will work well with the community as it develops a strategy in keeping with the governor’s mandate to produce one by next April.
