MONTICELLO – Because of a large number of people wanting to voice their opinions about the county’s proposal to sell its Care Center at Sunset Lake in Liberty, this morning’s public hearing was extended to Thursday where it will resume at 3 p.m.

Prior to today’s session where lawmakers had expected to vote on the sale issue after the public spoke, union members picketed outside the government center in Monticello to voice their opposition to the sale.

They are concerned that county employees will not be picked up by a private owner.

State Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh), a registered nurse, joined the protestors outside. She believes the facility should remain in the county’s hands.

“Healthcare is really not a business; it is to provide services. I know the county is in a tough situation and I think they need community input and they need community input to see what we can do to preserve the long-term care as it is,” she said.

The lawmakers are entertaining the idea of sale as a means of saving money given the revenue losses due to the economic shutdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.
