NEWBURGH – Christopher Gershel, who served as the City of Newburgh police chief from 1980 through 1994, died on July 1 at age 77.

Gershel previously served in the Army as a helicopter pilot and was stationed at West Point for some time.

He lived in recent years in Georgetown, Texas.

Several former colleagues and friends commented on his passing.

Former Town of Newburgh Police Chief Terry Kulisek said Gershel “left a mark on this world from his dedication to the military and law enforcement.”

During a fundraiser, Gershel took a pie in the face from then-Mayor Joan Shapiro
